In the presence of the COVID-19 pandemic, Business Alliance Financial Services (BAFS) needed an application to process Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans to assist small businesses during the crisis. With no existing infrastructure and time against everyone, the pressure was on for Bitovi to deliver. Keep reading to learn how Bitovi responded.

 

Paycheck Protection Program (PPP)

The Paycheck Protection Program loan emerged in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Since the pandemic has severely obstructed business and the economy, the loan serves to provide emergency relief to small businesses struggling to keep their workforce employed. The time sensitive nature of this made it imperative that Bitovi be fast and efficient in our approach.

Incremental Approach

An incremental approach was crucial to proving value early and to enable the collection of loan applications as soon as possible. The first PPP Forgiveness application was designed and built to accept and process applications from borrowers and lenders and went live in 3 months. 

As the pandemic progressed and SBA updated their loan guidelines, Bitovi adapted. New loan forms and amendments to others made the goal a moving target in which Bitovi never lost sight. Our solid development & delivery pipeline eased tensions on rapidly evolving products.

Keys to Success

Modern Tooling

The most impactful technical contributors to success were AWS CodeBuild, npm, and Nx. 

  • CI & CD from AWS CodeBuild brought much needed modernization to the existing manual environment management and deployment processes. With it came increased development velocity, and overall quality-of-life to the product development lifecycle.
  • Python was previously BAFS backend language of choice. It has a good community for libraries, but node’s npm is unmatched in this category. Access to the world's largest open source software registry ensured Bitovi could hit the ground running.
  • Nx is a suite of powerful, extensible dev tools to help you architect, test, and build applications in monorepo environments. It brought and orchestrated tooling to promote rapid and consistent development. Additionally, it provided capability for code scaffolding (both custom and out-of-the-box), and code sharing. A custom Nx plugin for AWS Lambda development was a major factor in the success of Nx in a server-less environment.

The Power and Flexibility of Nx

The custom Nx plugin that was built solved three vital issues and streamlined development. It promoted the flow of:

  1. Scaffolding - the ability to generate skeleton lambda services with boilerplate code and best practices when creating new functionality.
  2. Local Serving - serves lambda services to a local development environment where they can be run without any further configuration.
  3. Deployment - compiles services into bundles and deploys to AWS using the 'serverless' framework.

infoKnowing that requirements would change and grow, it was imperative that Bitovi had a well defined mechanism for evolution that this plugin provided.
